The EGR system functions by cycling a tiny quantity of spent exhaust gas back into the engine's combustion chambers via the intake manifold. This brings the temperature of the combustion process down, which in turn reduces the number of nitrogen oxides that are released into the atmosphere. The EGR valve is the most important part of the EGR system and is designed to be closed in its usual state.
